Cinema Forced To Give Refunds Worth £1,300 After 'Gentleminions' Trend On TikTok

A cinema has been forced to give refunds worth up to £1,300 after the ‘Gentleminions’ trend on TikTok.

The trend sees groups of lads donning their best clothes to watch Minions: Rise Of Gru before documenting their experience on the social media platform. You can see an example below:

Once inside, the undoubtedly smart-looking bunch then sit in a row with their hands together with only their fingers touching - just like Gru does in the film.

But the rowdier bunch of Gen Z cinemagoers have been seen to applaud and cheer throughout the film, prompting other viewers who are not a part of the trend to request refunds from the box office.

The manager of a Vue Cinema in Worcester told the Telegraph they had to issue £1,300 in refunds in just one day due to complaints from those not taking part in the trend.

“The trend cost me £1,300 yesterday,” the manager said. “I had to refund all of the tickets in that theatre because of kids shouting and mimicking the Minions while the film was playing.

“It was a group of about eight kids. Now, when we see any kids coming in to see the film dressed up we give them a warning.

“We tell them that if there is one complaint, whatever that may be, they will be kicked out of the cinema.”

Elsewhere, another manager at a cinema said: “The issue with the trend is children running around and treating the film as an opera, shouting and clapping.

“We had one small disturbance but we asked the kids to be quiet and they were so, fortunately, it’s not been an issue for us.”

Customers who were disturbed by the trend took to social media to complain about the viral trend, explaining how it had ruined their experience of the film.

One parent said: “Took the girls to see the Minions movie this evening. Walked out after an hour and got a refund.

“Pretty much the whole rear half of the cinema was full of teenagers screaming, shouting, chanting and yelling throughout the entire thing. Wtf is wrong with people?”

Meanwhile, someone else said: “People going into the Minions movie and making a huge mess and screaming and ruining the movie for other people…you’re not funny and it’s incredibly difficult to deal with when other customers demand refunds for your s***y behaviour."

“Absolute idiots ruined the movie for my two kids. They were upset by all the noise. Seems the youth of today are an inconsiderate bunch,” someone else added.

Meanwhile, some cinemas have even banned groups of ‘Gentleminions’ who have turned up in formal wear to watch the film.

One sign outside an Odeon cinema which has made the rounds on social media said that those dressed up to the nines would be refused entry to the film.

The sign said: “Due to recent disturbances following the #Gentleminions trend, any group of guests in formal attire will be refused entry for showings of Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

A spokesperson from Odeon told the Independent: "Due to a small number of incidents in our cinemas over the weekend we have had to restrict access in some circumstances."
