It's been drilled into us from an early age to brush our teeth for two minutes twice a day and floss every evening.
But for some of us, even brushing regularly with an electric toothbrush and whitening toothpaste isn't enough to stop discolouration.
Now, a dentist has shared three mistakes people make every day that could be stripping the enamel - the thin outer covering of the tooth that protects it from everyday wear and tear - from our teeth and turning them yellow.

Not only this, but it can also increase tooth sensitivity and make us more likely to get cavities and decay.
With all that in mind, you might want to take some notes.
Dr Surina Sehgal regularly shares oral hygiene tips and tricks with her 100,000 followers on TikTok.

In a recent video, that has been viewed almost 60,000 times, she explained how to keep your teeth pearly white.
Don't use a manual toothbrush
Dr Surina Sehgal warns to not 'use a manual toothbrush'.
She explained: "It's so common to over-scrub and brush too hard. This aggressive brushing will actually wear down the nice white enamel layer and expose that yellow dentine layer underneath."
Avoid snacking
The dentist also urges people to cut down on snacking as each time we eat our mouth goes into an 'acidic state' that can erode the enamel.

She said: "The more times you eat in a day, the more your teeth are under acid attack. This can erode your white enamel layer and expose that yellow dentine layer underneath."
Always drink fizzy drinks through a straw
And lastly, while fizzy drinks are the nemesis of dentists up and down the country due to their high acidity, Dr Sehgal says you don't have to cut them out completely.

That being said, she does recommend drinking them through a straw.
"If you use a straw, you limit the contact between your teeth and the drink and will cause less enamel erosion," the dentist explained.
But, if you've been guilty of skipping brushing your teeth before bed or drinking too much fizzy pop, don't worry. There are several expert-recommended ways you can rescue discoloured teeth.

First, specialist toothpastes which combine ingredients such as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide can improve their appearance.
And, there's a number of foods and drinks you'll want to cut down on.
Tea and coffee are major offenders when it comes to staining your teeth, but red wine, citrus fruit drinks, berries, curry and tomato based sauces can also cause them to become yellow.
We're not suggesting you live off a diet of water and plain vegetables, but eating the main offenders in moderation is important to keep your pearly whites, well, white.
