In what must surely be one of the more popular proposed remedies to a migraine, some people are swearing by an order of fries and Coke from McDonald's to make their head feel better.

While the standard advice would be to take some painkillers and drink water to deal with the terrible head pain, there are several who've said what actually helped relieve the migraine was a Maccies.

Medical educator Doctor Myro explained that there were several reasons why you might feel like your head is feeling better after fries and Coke, saying that you'd immediately feel better thanks to the hit of dopamine you'd get from fast food, which soon lifts your mood.

On top of that, your drink of Coke is going to have caffeine in it, which is more than you'd get in some painkillers and can help relieve the symptoms of a migraine.

So it sounds like the McDonald's Coke and fries 'fix' for a migraine isn't entirely catastrophic as an option, but another doctor has given a warning to those who reckon it's the right idea.

Dr Regina Krel, a neurologist, said that the mixture of caffeine, carbs and salt could help scupper a migraine or at least make it feel less painful, and that the sooner you get on treating a migraine, the better.

However, if you're thinking all you need to do is pop a McDonald's down your gullet to help take the edge off your head pain, then think again.

The doctor warned that relying on caffeine as a solution to migraines too often was likely to backfire and could result in you getting a headache after your migraine.

She said: "Caffeine, found in Coke, can lead to a rebound headache. Excessive caffeine use may contribute to sleep trouble, which can then worsen headaches.

"In addition, caffeine withdrawal headaches are real!"

So, in trying to quell your head pain, the doctor is warning you could just make it even worse and then set yourself up for more cranial discomfort further down the line.

Her advice is for people to try electrolyte water instead, as it would positively impact your brain without the other downsides.

She added that if you really wanted to go for some caffeine to tackle the migraine then you'd be better off just having a cup of coffee, while if you wanted to eat something that might help then you should look to 'a healthy protein-rich snack that isn’t processed'.

Rather boringly, it seems as though the healthy and sensible choices for food and drink remain undefeated when it comes to sorting out ailments with your body.

Even if some people are claiming benefits from McDonald's, and there is some scientific evidence to explain why it has this unexpected effect, there are plenty of other options to eat and drink that would get a much bigger thumbs up from a doctor.
