A doctor has explained the reason why so many couples are getting into 'sploshing' in the bedroom.

Erotic fantasies are nothing new, with just about anything you can think of being sexualised by someone at some point and sploshing is no different.

The term itself originated from the now defunct adults magazine Splosh! (which ran from 1989 until 2001) which explored the fetish within its pages.

Despite the magazine folding, interest in the trend hasn't gone away, with sploshing being extensively discussed on Reddit and TikTok.

But what exactly is sploshing, you ask?

The term is used to describe wet and messy fetishism, where couples find sexual pleasure by involving food and drink items in their bedroom activities.

When it comes to fetishes sploshing isn't always the most practical, especially as no one wants to be scrubbing pesky stains out their freshly washed bedding.

However there's a reason so many couples are into it, which certified sexologist and kink specialist Tiffany K. Chan explained to PopSugar.

"There are theories in the psychological and scientific communities that feel it's a kink that has developed through a feeling of joy a person held in formative years for playing with messy substances, also known as 'messy play theory'," she said.

Dr Chan went on to add that the fascination could also stem from an urge to rebel against the norms of society, which value 'orderly living and cleanliness'.

"Other theories suggest it's associated with the desire to simply do something 'naughty,'" she explained.

Meanwhile Ayesha Hussain, co-creator of Pass The Porn and founder of The Violet, previously explained the trend as something which links to the mouth being an 'inherently sexual' part of the body.

"There are aspects of the mouth being a vessel that are inherently sexual," she said.

"It opens, it’s moist, and when you get aroused, your mouth opens more and gets more lubricated," she continued.

Giving tips for curious couples looking to get into sploshing, Hussain added that it's a fairly easy kink to get into.

"It can be anything: spaghetti, cucumbers, chocolate, etc," she said.

“Watch every movement, taste every smell, imagine their saliva accumulating, and go from there!”

So there you have it, perhaps sploshing is something for you and your beloved to try - just make sure you put your bedsheets in the wash afterwards.
