Johnny Depp has said he would 'lock himself in the bathroom' to escape Amber Heard's violence.

The film star is suing his ex-wife for $50 million (£38.2m) for defamation over an op-ed she wrote in 2018 for The Washington Post.

In the article, which did not name Depp specifically, Heard claimed she had suffered abuse in the past.

Heard has made a counterclaim against her ex-husband for $100m (£76.6m) in a case that is currently being held in Virginia.

Depp, 58, is currently on the stand and has been answering questions about his childhood as well as his relationship with Heard.

And today (20 April), he claimed that he would lock himself in the bathroom and other rooms when Heard, 35, became angry.

The Pirates of The Caribbean star said: "I would remove myself from the situation, as I'd done as a youth, as much as possible.

"I certainly didn't believe there was any need for these various subjects or arguments to come up and travel the distance that they did so very quickly, to ramp up so fast.

"It was like you were pinned to a wall and you had to listen to it and just take it.

"So I found the only way to find any sort of peace was to try and walk away. If she didn't allow me to walk away, then I would just got and lock myself in the bathroom or anywhere she couldn't get into.

"And that happened constantly over the years."

Depp went on: "Miss Heard, in her frustration and in her rage and her anger, she would strike out; it could begin with a slap, a shove, it could begin with throwing a TV remote at my head, it could be throwing a glass of wine in my face.

Heard has made a counterclaim against Depp for $100m.

"But all in all it was just a constant... there was a built in list of things I had said.

"My personal experiences, which I had shared with Miss Heard, those facts were used against meat weapons especially when it came to my kids. There was no need for it."

Depp also told the court that he never hit Heard during their relationship and has never struck a woman in his life.

Earlier this week, Depp's bodyguard, Sean Bett, discussed photos of the actor with injuries to his face.

Bett alleged that wasn't the only time he saw the actor with injuries to his face and opened up about how Depp and Heard argued constantly.

He explained how one time, when Depp asked him to take Heard to their penthouse to calm down, he told her privately in the car that 'this can’t continue'.

Bett added that 'you’re either going to kill each other or you’re going to end up in jail'.
