A learner driver has been branded an ‘idiot’ after being arrested twice on the same day, in the same car and for the same offence, with police saying he'll now be going to court for two offences.
The driver only had a provisional license, but was seen driving without supervision in a Mercedes near St Austell in Cornwall on Wednesday (26 January).
The car was then seized, but Devon and Cornwall Police said the unnamed man ended up going to the police pound to collect it later that day with another insured motorist.
After receiving ‘information’ to suggest that the learner driver might get behind the wheel again to drive the car unsupervised, officers ‘kept an eye out’ on nearby roads.
Lo and behold, their suspicions were correct, meaning they had to stop the car to seize it once again.
A Facebook post from Devon and Cornwall’s dedicated ‘No Excuse’ team said: "It's not often we can say we have seized the same car twice in one day...
“Driver of the CLK only holds a provisional licence. We stopped him this morning in Bugle near St Austell. He was not complying with the conditions of his licence. The vehicle was seized and he was reported for the offence.
“We then received some information that the same person was on his way to collect the vehicle with another insured person but they were driving to the recovery yard rather than getting a lift.
“Suspecting that our provisional licence holder may end up driving unsupervised again we kept an eye out.
“Shortly after we saw the vehicle being driven on the A30 near Summercourt. We stopped it again and found the provisional licence holder unsupervised again. Vehicle seized for a second time and he will now be going to court for two offences.”
The team added that another man will also be facing court, having been on his way to pick up the first bloke despite being a disqualified driver.
They said: “To top it off, the person who was on their way to pick him up was stopped in the A class. He was a disqualified driver… His vehicle was seized and he will be going to court as well.”
Social media users were baffled by the ‘stupidity’ of the driver, with one commenting on Facebook: “You couldn’t make it up! Well done no excuses team
Another said: “Jerk in a Merc 2 times.”
Someone else wrote: “A village somewhere is missing its idiot(s)!”
A fourth added: “Could you be any more bl***y stupid. Honestly.”
