“The merit belongs to this group, which is above individualities, it is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also one of all Argentinians.
“We did it!!! LET'S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!! We’ll see each other very soon.”
The post hit 55.9 million likes on the platform in just over 24 hours, surpassing the previous record set by an image of an egg.
The image was posted in January 2019, and had set out to overtake the record at the time of 18 million likes, previously held by Kylie Jenner.

Messi seems like a pretty worthy successor.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner had already taken the mantle as the most liked Instagram post from a sportsperson by overtaking his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Prior to the FIFA World Cup, the Portuguese star had posted an advert from Louis Vuitton that featured both himself and Messi playing chess.

That post has since accumulated over 42 million likes, however, Messi’s record-breaking carousel overtook that mark in less than a day after being posted.
However, Ronaldo is still the most-followed person on Instagram with a staggering 519 million followers, compared to Messi’s 401 million.
