Nicole Bullock, a passenger on the ship, said she woke up to hear an emergency message on the boat.
She wrote on X: "Woken up on the cruise ship around 3.40am to the emergency message 'Oscar Oscar Oscar off the port side'. Man overboard. Been watching the rescue efforts off my balcony all day, hoping for a positive outcome.
"This is Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas, and we’re in the Adriatic Sea, between Italy and Croatia. Our port day in Zadar was canceled, and the Croatian Coast Guard is assisting in the search."
The cruise is thought to be on a seven-day trip around Greece, Italy and Croatia.
