'Mouth To Hell' Is Getting Bigger And There's Nothing That Will Stop Its Growth

The crater has grown in Siberia as local villagers fear the ever-growing site.

A crater dubbed the ‘mouth to hell’ has opened in Siberia and some villagers claim the gigantic opening is connected to the supernatural.

The Batagaika crater has been measured since the 1980s and is now around one kilometre long and 86 metres deep.

The open earth has exposed layers of soil that is 120,00 to 200,000 years old.

According to preliminary dating, it is possible that the lowest layer of soil may be up to 650,000 years old.

This would make it the oldest uncovered sunken area in Eurasia.

The growing movement of the slump has not been stabilised and cannot be stopped. It is currently growing by around 20 to 30 metres every year.

Investigations into the the sinking mass show that it will continue to grow and affect the landscape.

It has been confirmed that the cause of the opening is melting permafrost land.

The land at the site, which was permanently frozen during the Quaternary Ice age, 2.58 million years ago was exposed to sunlight in the 1960s when the forest was cleared.

Ice in the soil started to melt, causing the ground to compact, slump and subside.

As the Earth continues to get hotter, this could result in more of its surface being reached by higher temperatures and ice deep within the surface starting to melt.

The impact of global warming on temperatures means the crater will expand at such a pace that it will continue to engulf everything around it until it settles.

Concerns have been raised by local villagers who have reported hearing unsettling booms coming from the site.

The Yakut people who reside in the area believe the crater is a passage to a spirit world or an opening to hell.

Researcher Julian Murton has studied the opening and found only rock, no gateway or passage at the bottom.

One expedition in 2018 by North-Eastern Federal University, and Kindai University in Japan found a baby horse preserved in Batagay.

The foal was roughly 42,000 years old and had preserved hair and its internal organs intact.

Scientists were even able to extract liquid blood from the preserved body.

While a ‘mouth to hell’ has yet to surface at the Batagaika crater, locals will remain cautious of the mysterious and ever-expanding site.
