A granddad who was struggling to cope with the death of his wife has found a new lease of life and some top-notch dance moves after going clubbing all night with his grandson during a holiday to Spain.
Jake Gill, 22, moved in with his 84-year-old granddad, Denis, last year. Jake says Denis was in a dark place after the loss of his wife - and didn't feel like he had much to live for anymore.
So, inspired by fond memories of family holidays to the coastal town of Denia, near Benidorm, Jake thought it was the perfect place for them to return to.
"From the age of 11, I spent every summer in Denia with my family; and fell in love with the area," Jake told LADbible. "The fact my grandparents had been going there for years, to me it felt like home. My family were always there; just everything about it I love. To me it is a home from home."
Most of the week went as planned, with much of their time spent playing cards, relaxing on the beach and soaking up some much-needed sun; Denis even told his grandson some old war stories.
However, the final night of their trip got a little out of hand, when, after a few large Bailey's, Jake's granddad decided it was time for the pair to sample a bit of the local nightlife - something they had talked about but never got round to doing during the week.
Jake said: "I thought wow! This is really happening. So we walked over to the club, my Granddad had his walking stick and big coat, and there were lots of people staring - clearly talking about us.
"But we got up there and my Granddad loved it. He had never heard any of this music; it was very difficult to talk due to the noise, but my Granddad was so happy just enjoying the music, drinking and looking around at everyone."
After sinking a few gin and cokes - Denis's favourite - and more than enough beers, the party-hard pair called it a night, rolling back into their villa at 4.30am.
Jake added: "It was so surreal, just amazing. A night I will never forget."
Since returning from their holiday, Jake says it has made the pair of them closer than ever before.
Before the trip, Jake says Denis had been inconsolable since his wife, Norma, died, after battling ovarian cancer in November 2017.
Jake said: "The reason this holiday was so special is because it was just us two - and we were able to have lots of heart to hearts; some memories I will never forget. We got to talk about my nan lots, which was so magical.
"It is hard to explain in words what happened on our holiday but it brought us very close.
"And he is a much happier person; me moving in and our holiday was life changing for him. Prior, it was 'oh I don't know how much longer I have'... now he is talking about when his next trip is. He often goes on trips to Spain with my mum as well."
And Denis has got his sights set on another night out with his grandson, who is moving to Denia later this year to take up a teaching position.
Jake added: "My granddad has already booked his holiday the same time in October to come and see me again, and we are 100 percent going on another night out.
"I am sad to leave him, but it is a new chapter in my life and one that wouldn't have happened without my Nan and Granddad."
