Social media are blaming People Magazine for a cover story that featured television legend Betty White being in 'such good health' just three days before she passed away on Friday (31 Dec).
The 99-year-old was 17 days from her 100th birthday and the story, which ran on December 28, revealed what kept White going for so long.
The actor pointed towards her sharp sense of humour and her diet.
She told People: "I'm so lucky to be in such good health and feel so good at this age. It's amazing."
When People asked Betty about her diet, a typical question when someone approaches their centenary, she responded with typical humour.
Instead of referring to daily glasses of red wine, porridge, or any of the other 'super foods' centenarians often consume, Betty claimed an unexpected secret.
She said: "I try to avoid anything green. I think it's working."
Beside the no-veg diet, Betty claimed it was rather her positive mindset that got her through all these years.
She said: "I got it from my mom, and that never changed. I always find the positive."
However, people on social media decided that the story was tempting fate.
One user wrote: "You gotta admit, having an entire magazine devoted to your 100th birthday hit the racks and then dying before that birthday is excellent comic timing.
A second commented: "Happy New Year to everyone but People Magazine who killed Betty White by tempting fate."
Another added: "Thanks for killing Betty White, @people."
TMZ allege that White died from natural causes, however, all is yet to be confirmed.
Most loved for her part in The Golden Girls, the star has spent 80 years in the business.
Tributes have started to pour in and POTUS Joe Biden issued his own statement on Twitter.
He wrote: "Betty White brought a smile to the lips of generations of Americans. She’s a cultural icon who will be sorely missed.
"Jill and I are thinking of her family and all those who loved her this New Year’s Eve."
Someone else tweeted: "Betty White was an icon, a legend, and consistently found a way to be the moment over her nearly 70 year career.
A trailblazer. An original. And a truly kind soul. May she be forever surrounded by four-legged animals in heaven."
