Shoppers baffled as Sainsbury’s introduces new barrier system to stop you leaving without receipt

The barrier system means shoppers who use self-checkout areas need to scan their receipt before they are allowed to leave.

Shoppers have been left baffled as Sainsbury's introduces a new barrier system to stop you leaving without a receipt.

To be honest, the measures the supermarket is taking are not too dissimilar from what other UK supermarket giants are/have been doing.

Do you not remember last year when customers took to social media to express their shock over finding security tags on various everyday food items?

When you pop to your local shop to pick up some butter, chicken, or cheese, you'd think you'd be able to sail through the self-scanner and be in and out in five minutes or less.

But that hasn't exactly been the case for a lot of shoppers, as the likes of cheese, butter, chicken and even lamb chops have had security tags on them in some stores.

We live in quite extraordinary times, eh.

Sainsbury's made the headlines late last year with a scheme that required shoppers to scan their receipts before they could leave the store as an act of security.

New security measures have made there way into supermarkets like Sainsbury's.

While the supermarket giant said at the time the proof-of-purchase barriers were not new, many shoppers had only just discovered it in their store for the first time and vented their frustration on social media.

And that frustration is still continuing today, as one Sainsbury's shopper has taken to Reddit to share a picture of a new sign in his local store.

Posted to the Manchester forum, the user who goes by the name of @not_r1c1, posted a picture of the sign - presumably in Manchester - that read: 'We've introduced new barriers as you leave this store. You'll need to take your receipt and scan this on the barcode reader in front of the barriers."

Captioning the post, the shopper wrote: "Not a fan of how this is spreading..."

Shoppers are not impressed with the measure.

It's worth noting you only have to scan your receipt if you've used the self-checkout, though that hasn't made it any less annoying for a lot of shoppers.

Many shoppers have been discussing the system in the comments to the Reddit post, with the vast majority rather baffled by it.

"I got a messed up one a while ago. Tbh I don’t think the system even works cause if you just show up the guy buzzes you through without a receipt," one person wrote.

They continued: "Pointless waste of money and time, just makes everyone’s life harder."

Meanwhile, a second added: "Ugh, is this really a thing now? Well, Sainsbury's have lost my custom."

LADbible has reached out to Sainsbury's for comment.
