Alan Brazil explains emotional TalkSPORT absence after 'life-saving' emergency operation

The former Manchester United footballer has released a statement thanking people for their support

Much-loved British football pundit Alan Brazil has explained why he has been absent on TalkSPORT after undergoing a 'life-saving' medical operation.

The 66 year old is a mainstay on the radio station, being a voice for many in the mornings through his Breakfast Show.

But the former Ipswich Town, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United footballer has been absent for a number of weeks, with the retired Scottish footballer explaining health problems have been the reason for this.

Fans started asking where the big man was after he wasn't on the airwaves during the famous Cheltenham Festival; an annual horse-racing event he has a huge passion for.

Taking to his X account, Brazil said this morning (11 May): "Hi guys, I hope that everyone’s well.

"Some of you will have noticed that I've not been around. I recently had a life-saving operation and I’m deeply grateful to the brilliant medical team who have looked after me."

He added: "It will be some time yet before I'm fully back to myself and for now I am focussed on my recovery in private.

"Thank you to my family and those close to me who’ve been supporting me / putting up with me!

I’ll see you all soon, AL."

Brazil accompanied the message with a flexing bicep emoji.

Responding, fans rushed to give Brazil their best wishes.

Football journalist Andy Mitten wrote: "All the best, Alan."

The official TalkSPORT X account posted: "Everyone at TalkSPORT is wishing you the very best, Big Al. We can't wait to have you back with us."

Another posted: "Take your time big man and get better, mornings without you are not the same but the team covering you are doing a brilliant job! All the best."

And a third said: "Get well soon Alan. Take your time to recover and enjoy your family and home life.

"Work can wait and we look forward when you have fully recovered to having you back on air."

Recent health problems

Hailing from Govan, the former footballer has been battling health problems in recent years.

Only two months ago in February, he missed two full weeks of his breakfast show due to an infection in his ear.

Recalling his ear infection after returning to the airwaves, Brazil noted: "The big news this morning is I'm alive and kicking.

"I've never had so many texts and emails asking, 'Are you all right? Are you dead? Are you dying?' Give us a break.

"Honestly. It was my ears. I had a big infection in my right ear, and my left ear was blocked. I was sat here thinking I was going to fall off my chair.

"It's the worst I have been, terrible. These [studio] lights don't help. I have said to them to turn the lights down but do they listen? It's stupid."
