Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege has tragically died following an accident during the Tour of Austria.
The 25-year-old was racing for the Coop-Repsol team today (6 July) when he suffered fatal injuries. Race organisers confirmed he had died following an incident in the mountain descent during the today's fourth stage in Austria.
A statement from the organisers read: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of Andre Drege.

“On Saturday July 6, following a very serious crash during the descent of the Grossglockner at stage 4 of the Tour of Austria, Andre crashed and sustained severe injuries.
“Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with Andre’s family and loved ones and his team Coop-Repsol during this incredibly difficult time.”
The cyclist had won seven races already this year and was well in the running to move up to WorldTour level in 2025.

Coop-Repsol paid tribute to Drege as it said in a statement: “We are devastated by the tragic passing of Andre Drege. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andre’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
“Andre’s family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss and we kindly ask that their wishes are respected.”
Following the incident today, the podium ceremony was cancelled. However, it is not yet clear whether the final stage of the race tomorrow will still take place or not.
The UCI (cycling's world governing body) wrote on X: “The UCI is devastated to learn of the death of professional cyclist Andre Drege at the Tour of Austria. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and team-mates.”

Other professional teams also paid tribute to Drege as Lidl-Trek said in a post: “Heartbreaking news from Tour of Austria today. We are sending all our love and strength to the friends, family and Team Coop-Repsol team-mates of Andre Drege.”
And EF Pro Cycling also wrote: “A loss felt in the entire cycling community. Our thoughts are with the friends, family and team-mates of Andre Drege. Rest in peace, Andre.”
Tributes have also poured in from teams competing in the Tour de France after the news of Drege’s death reached cycling’s biggest race.

“It’s hard to process what happened, we are all quite in shock,” Tour de France leader Tadej Pogacar said.
“This is very sad to hear. My condolences go to his family, teammates and all his loved ones. In the cycling world, we need to take care of each other.”
