The former Barcelona footballer has been found guilty of sexual assault

Former Brazil and Barcelona footballer Dani Alves has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for sexual assault.

A Catalonian court found him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in December 2022.

The 40-year-old former footballer was arrested in January 2023 after being accused of 'sexual assault with penetration', he has denied any wrongdoing throughout the trial and will be allowed to appeal the verdict.

Alves has also been ordered to pay his victim €150,000 (£128,000) and has received a nine-and-a-half year restraining order.

After his release from prison Alves will have to complete a further five years of probation.
