Euro 2024 fan zone locked down hours before opening game after suspicious object discovered

A suspicious object was found

Police have cordoned off part of the Euro 2024 fan zone in Berlin just hours before the competition is due to start.

A suspicious object was found at the Scheidemannstraße entrance in Berlin, Germany next to the Reichstag building and officers have kept supporters away from the area.

Local media says the object was a 'suspicious backpack' which was found in one of the entrances to the fan zone, which can hold up to 10,000 people.

A spokesperson for Berlin police said: "A restricted area has been set up for safety reasons. The baggage is now being examined. It could also be that someone did not take it into the fan zone."

The first match of Euro 2024 is taking place in Munich as Germany play Scotland shortly, while Berlin's first game is Spain vs Croatia tomorrow (15 June).

In total the German capital will host six games of Euro 2024, including the final.
