Football set to introduce blue cards as major change to the game is signed off

The International Football Association Board will reportedly announce the blue card change very soon.

Footie fans familiar with the yellow and red cards are in for a shock as a new coloured card will reportedly be added to the beautiful game.

This comes after the International Football Association Board reportedly signing off on the introduction of a blue card, according to a report by The Telegraph.

UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin has already blasted the idea, saying it won't be used in European cup competition.

“It’s not football anymore. We will not use them in Uefa competition," he told the outlet.

“Ifab has four European members. I don’t think they will do something against the interests of football. And, if they do, then we will deal with it later.

“I think we don’t need a change of rules. We don’t need to be remembered as important persons that changed football.

"We don’t need to change football. We are passing through.”

Now, it's being reported that sin-bins will be introduced in professional football matches along with the new blue cards.

This will take some getting used to.

The new rule will potentially see players removed from the field for 10 minutes if they commit a cynical foul or show dissent towards an official.

Also, the new card is set to be limited for fouls committed during a promising attack plus dissent.

The way it works is if a player receives two blue cards or a combination of yellow and blue, they could be shown a red.

It has been reported that the new protocol will be announced on Friday (9 February).

Taking to X (Twitter) fans have been commenting on the news, as one wrote: "Not a fan of the blue card, sin-bin trial.

"Pretty confident it will just add another painful layer of subjectivity we all spend hours arguing about.

"10v11 rarely makes for a fun spectacle, so why strive for more of it?

"Football is a simple game. Let's keep it that way."

"Blue card to be trialled in between yellow and red card in football," added United fan channel owner Mark Goldbridge.

"God help up. They can't even get their heads around what's a yellow and red.....

"Why are people obsessed with fixing things that aren't broken."

A third commented: "I'm finding the blue card vitriol bizarre. It might not work. This is a trial.

"It's there to solve two clear problems in the game - a) sometimes it's more advantageous to commit a foul than allow a player through b) a red card ruins the game."

LADbible has contacted IFAB, FIFA and the FA for comment.
