Rules at the Olympics aren’t just for the sports but also for the athletes more generally.
And if they don’t follow them, they can see themselves getting removed from the Olympic Village, with a swimmer recently departing for creating an ‘inappropriate environment’.
It was announced earlier today (5 August) that Luana Alonso is no longer staying in the Olympic Village with her fellow athletes until the competition closes this weekend.

Representing Paraguay, the athlete finished sixth in her heat and failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Alonso then went on to announce her retirement on social media.
And now, Larissa Schaerer, the head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (POC) said in a statement: "Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay.
"We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes' Village."

The Paraguay officials didn’t expand further on what the ‘inappropriate’ behaviour was but there are several rules to be followed.
One of the most serious is that athletes are not permitted to leave the village without permission – which is what Brazil’s Ana Carolina Vieira did with her boyfriend.
While having sex with other athletes in the Village isn’t banned (even though some experts say it should be), things like having a party and drinking alcohol aren’t allowed.

Since Tokyo 2020, there has also been a ban on protests and political, religious and racial propaganda and not just in the Village – the rule also applied to the field of pay, medal ceremonies and other official ceremonies.
And when it comes to the social media posts we’ve all been loving from the athletes, there are reportedly restrictions on them.
The Olympians are free to show us bits of trivia like what’s in the medal boxes or to send brutal messages to ex-teammates, but they reportedly cannot share anything commercial, anything using AI-generation or live videos longer than two minutes.
While it hasn’t been confirmed just what Alonso did to see her leave the Village, Paraguayan media outlets reported she had spent time in Disneyland instead of supporting her teammates which didn’t sit very well with her country’s Olympic leadership.

The swimmer has reportedly now returned to the US, where she attends university in Dallas, Texas.
