Olympics viewers have been left speechless after discovering that Team GB runner George Mills has a very famous father.

Mills found himself at the centre of an athletics storm earlier today (7 August) when the Brit was seen squaring up to French runner Hugo Hay after a chaotic men's 5,000 metre heats.

In a shocking turn of events, four runners found themselves tumbling to the ground in the final stretch of the race, with Mills one of the unlucky athletes in the pile-up.

The 25-year-old was later seen angrily confronting Frenchman Hay on camera.

In the hours following the confrontation the spotlight has been on Mills, with several people on social media surprised to learn that the runner actually has a pretty famous sportsman as a father.

Now, the surname Mills is a pretty common one here in the UK, so it's understandable if you missed this piece of Olympics trivia - with runner George actually being the son of former footballer Danny Mills.

Looks like the sporting genes are strong in the Mills family!

Danny enjoyed a glittering career as a footballer, best known for his time at Leeds United and later Manchester City. He would also make 19 appearances for the England team, including starting at the 2002 World Cup, as well as being part of the Leeds United team who made it to the 2000 Champions League final.

This piece of trivia may be common knowledge amongst keen football fans, however, several Olympics viewers have been left shocked by the revelation.

"Can’t get over the fact that this is ex footballer Danny Mills’ son. He looks like he’s only about 5 years younger than him," one person wrote on X.

"Why does Danny Mills son look older than him," a second person joked, while a third commented: "How does Danny Mills' son look older than Danny Mills?"

Lets just hope none of these comments ever encounter George on the athletics track.

Other viewers were quick to claim that it seems George has also inherited his father's temperament, with one person writing: "Unfortunate and devastating for George and a hint of his father’s temperament showing through there.

"His father is the old Leeds left back Danny Mills."

Meanwhile, George has since spoken about the bust-up with Hay in a post-race interview as well as recounting his version of events.

"I don't know if you guys could see it on the TV," he recalled. "Look, I wouldn't go for a gap if it wasn't there. That would be a pretty dumb strategy... I pulled onto the outside and there was space."

He added: "I got stepped out on...then boom, the French lad took me down!

"It was a perfect qualifier for me. I was thinking nobody in this field can keep up with me and then bang hit the deck. But what can you do?"
