The BBC has come under fire for accidentally going back on its promise of spoiler-free highlights for World Cup matches.
The 2026 World Cup is now underway, after hosts Mexico kicked off against South Africa at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca, followed by South Korea facing off against Czechia.
Due to the time difference between the three host nations and Europe, this means several matches will take place while most of us are sound asleep.
For example, South Korea's win against Czechia kicked off at 3am, while Scotland's World Cup return against Haiti will take place at 2am next Sunday.

Which means fans who aren't planning to get up in the early hours of the morning will want to avoid spoilers when waking up.
It's for this reason that the BBC made a 'no spoilers' zone for fans to access highlights.

However, it appears the broadcaster has been accused of breaking this promise just one day into the tournament.
How did the BBC break its 'spoiler free' promise?
For its recap of Mexico v South Africa, the thumbnail teased three red cards and featured an image of Wolves striker Raul Jimenez celebrating.
To be fair, three red cards in an opening match of the World Cup is pretty exciting and will entice a lot of people to click on the video – but it also received a fair deal of criticism.
"BBC having a ‘no spoilers’ section for World Cup highlights yet they’ve spoiled: 3 red cards [and] Raul Jimenez’ goal," read one complaint.
The disgruntled user wasn't the only person criticising the broadcaster, with another person writing: "You had one job, lads."
"A great idea, poorly executed on the Mexico highlights," wrote football magazine Mundial, while The i Paper's football writer Daniel Storey admitted the whole thing was indeed 'slightly frustrating'.
“No spoilers” but it says “THREE RED CARDS” in the thumbnail and has a picture of Jimenez celebrating.

Where to watch spoiler-free World Cup highlights
Fortunately, the broadcaster appeared to learn its lesson for South Korea's 2-1 over Czechia, with the video's title and thumbnail giving absolutely nothing away – unless you count an image of a smiling Son Heung-min as spoilers.
But if you're looking for another platform to provide you with spoiler-free highlights, then it may be worth checking out this website created by X user Sam (@FPLSportScience), which aims to provide fans with a way of accessing highlights without seeing the final score plastered all over the thumbnail.
Named Spoiler Free Football, the platform means fans can easily access the Mexico v South Africa highlights without seeing the 'three red cards' spoiler.
Explaining why he decided to make the website, Sam noted that he often finds it 'infuriating' that so many highlight videos spoil the outcome of matches.

"I also envisaged a lot of people wanting to watch highlights at 6am before work, having not had the energy/time to stay up and watch matches. A single place where you can view highlights without seeing scores seemed like a good idea," he told LADbible.
Going on to reveal that the initial feedback to his endeavour had been 'incredible', he added: "I think a lot of people relate to the issue, so they’re happy to see an easy fix.
"It has been cool to see some big accounts share it, but I now feel pressure to ensure that it works."
Meanwhile, the folks over at BBC Sport are being, well, good sports about the whole situation, with a spokesperson telling LADbible there will be absolutely no hints going forward.
"Noted! We thought we'd give you a bit of a tease, but it sounds like people are after pure suspense and surprise… so we’re doubling down on no hints at all," the BBC Sport spokesperson said.
