Murderer Scott Peterson breaks silence for first time in 20 years with interview from jail

Murderer Scott Peterson breaks silence for first time in 20 years with interview from jail

Scott Peterson was convicted of killing his wife Laci in 2004

Convicted murderer Scott Peterson has spoken out for the first time in 20 years as he continues to maintain his innocence.

Expectant mother Laci Peterson was reported missing on Christmas Eve 2002, with an extensive search taking place over the following few months.

Just under four months later a couple walking their dog would discover the body of an infant in the San Fransisco Bay region of California, with the remains of a woman being recovered the following day.

It would later be confirmed that these were the bodies of Laci and her unborn son.

Following the discovery of the bodies, Scott would become the focus of police's investigation and was arrested four days later.

He was convicted of two counts of murder in 2004 and subsequently sentenced to death.

Peterson would later appeal his conviction, with the death sentence eventually being downgraded to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Despite the conviction Scott has always maintained that he did not kill Laci and their unborn son, with the 51-year-old granted a status hearing after the LA Innocence Project claimed it had new evidence.

Laci's story is currently back in the news with the release of Netflix's new true crime documentary American Murder: Laci Peterson. Peacock has also announced it is releasing the series Face to Face with Scott Peterson which will see him tell his side of the story from inside prison.

The case remains a highly divisive one, prosecutors claim that Peterson was an adulterer looking for a way out of his marriage and obligations as a father. However Peterson's defence have since claimed that there is not enough evidence to convict him beyond reasonable doubt, instead putting forward the theory that Laci had been abducted and killed after witnessing a burglary occur opposite her home.

"The Los Angeles Innocence Project has come on board to help find all the things that were ignored by the Modesto Police Department," Peterson's sister-in-law Janey says in one clip, while Scott himself adds at the end of the trailer that people should listen to him, saying: "I didn't kill my family."

Peacock's upcoming three-part series stands in contrast the Netflix's, with American Murder instead choosing to focus on the viewpoint of those who were closest to Laci, such as her mother Sharon Rocha and Scott's former girlfriend Amber Fry.

Face to Face with Scott Peterson premieres on Peacock from 20 August, while American Murder: Laci Peterson is currently available to stream on Netflix.
