What is the 'dieselgate' scandal?

Back in 2015, it was revealed that a number of car manufacturers installed illegal emissions-cheating software into vehicles that run on diesel fuel.

Dubbed 'dieselgate', the cheat method meant that the cars in question would show artificially lower emissions when being tested.

As a result, when vehicles were tested under lab conditions, the engines released safe measures of nitrogen oxide which complied with EU and UK regulations.

But when the cars were put to the test on the roads, the cars emitted much larger levels of the gases than previously claimed.

So, if you owned or leased a diesel vehicle that was made between September 2009 and July 2016, it may have been installed with a built-in defeat device - and you could be eligible for a whopping payout.

So, are you eligible for compensation?

The initial 'dieselgate' scandal involved vehicles from the VW, including Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, and Seat, and was settled out of court.

But lawmakers are now looking at Citroën, Ford, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot and Renault, with the 'Prohibited Defeat Device Trial' scheduled for October 2025.

While the manufacturers all refute the claims, owners of the vehicles in question are being invited to apply now to see if they could be eligible to make a claim on a no-win, no-fee basis.

How to claim for 'dieselgate' compensation now

If you think you are eligible for compensation, then you can head over to the Diesel Claim website here and enter your registration number.

You will then be asked a series of questions regarding the vehicle, such as how your purchased it and how long you owned it for.

If you owned or leased a diesel vehicle between 2009 and 2022, you could be entitled to compensation up to £10,000 due to higher fuel and repair costs.

Joining the claim is operated on a no-win-no-fee basis, but you must be mindful that if a court rules in favour of the manufacturer, you could still be liable for legal costs.
