Madeleine McCann's parents appear to remain optimistic about finding answers about her disappearance over a decade ago.

Madeleine was just three years old when she went missing on a family holiday in Praia da Luz, Lagos, Portugal, sparking a worldwide campaign to find the missing child.

Initial investigations didn't result in finding Madeleine and, in May 2023, police searched a Portuguese reservoir - which had previously been searched in February and March 2008.

The search ended a few days later and 'material' was sent off to be analysed. Further details on the 'material' were not released.

There still haven't been any arrests in regards to Madeleine's disappearance, but Christian Brueckner remains as the prime suspect in the case.

Brueckner is a convicted rapist and is currently serving time in a German prison.

In light of Madeleine's disappearance still being actively investigated 16 years on from her apparent abduction, her parents - Kate and Gerry McCann - believe 'such perseverance will eventually yield results'.

In their new year statement shared to the Official Find Madeleine Campaign on Facebook, they penned: "Another year comes to a close. I’m sure they’re getting shorter!

"Whilst there is no new significant news to share in the search for Madeleine, efforts continue with the same determination, commitment and vigour. We believe such perseverance will eventually yield results.

"Thank you again for your support, Christmas wishes and shared hope.

"Despite our own personal circumstances, it is impossible to be unaffected by the awful events happening around the world this year with so many wars, immeasurable pain and suffering, children abducted, killed and orphaned.

"Let’s hope that 2024 brings a greater love for mankind, hope and peace to us all."

Madeleine McCann's parents shared a new year's statement.

People have since shared their own well wishes to the McCann family.

"Hope this is the year you get some answers my prayes are with you and your family," one person wrote.

Another added: "Praying that this year will bring hope, resolution, comfort and peace to so many people!"

May 2023 marked Madeleine's 20th birthday and, at the time, her parents vowed to 'never give up' on finding her.

"Happy birthday Madeleine! We love you and we’re waiting for you," Kate and Gerry wrote on Facebook.

"We’re never going to give up.”

As well as Madeleine, Kate and Gerry - who wed in 1998 - are also parents to 18-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie.
