Ah, you’ve just been to see boss man at the shop and picked up a nice crisp, cold bottle of fizzy drink. And you can’t even resist, you decide no one’s looking and you twist that lid and go to flick it off so you can have a quick cheeky swig.
Except the lid doesn’t just whizz off for you to catch in your hand, it stays right there.
Yeah, you know exactly what I mean. Those new lids on plastic drink bottles that twist open but stay attached.

And it seems it’s not just bottles of Diet Coke and the likes, as Brits ‘want to scream’ after spotting an ‘annoying’ change to milk bottle lids that’s dividing the internet.
The milk bottle kick-off
A popular cleaning TikToker, user ‘@cleaningwithreet’, shared a video of herself opening up a carton of milk. And as she unscrewed the lid to then open it up to the side, still attached to the bottle, she wrote: “Not the milk cartons too.”

The woman added: “I do not like this,” as users in the comments said: “This better not be a thing!”

Others said it’s their ‘last straw’ as one put: “The way I actually SCREAMED NO.”
But while some said they’ll be ‘cutting every single one off’, many agreed: “I really don’t understand the hate for these lids. They don’t even cause that much of an inconvenience.”
And plenty said they will even ‘welcome the change’.
Why are lids suddenly attached to plastic bottles?
Well, if you’re a hater of this design, I hate to break it to you but it’s actually part of the law.

Due to new EU rules, plastic bottles in Europe are changing. Having come into force by 3 July, it was made mandatory that all EU states phased out those regular loose, removable caps for plastic drinks bottles up to three litres.
This is all part of an EU directive announced back in 2018 in the hopes of reducing single-use plastic waste.
It’s said that those loose little lids are one of the most littered single-use plastics on beaches.
But why is the UK still having new bottle caps, despite Brexit?
So, yeah, it is an EU policy and thanks to those voters, we’re obviously no longer part of the EU.

But we’re still drinking many of the same products as people over there and companies tend to mass produce their bottles and caps. So, most of them aren’t exactly specially making different styles for different countries.
This means even though we don’t legally have to have the attached lids, the new bottles are being rolled out in the UK simply because it’s easier for production, EuroNews state.
