However, it seems that people on the internet do actually have divided opinions about the beloved summertime tradition - specifically what goes on the barbecue.

Now, you'd think the answer to 'what would you like on the barbecue' wouldn't be something to cause controversy.

Most people will option to have chicken, beef or sausages on their grill, or maybe halloumi cheese or a veggie burger for the anyone with a plant based diet. Easy to sort, right?

Well - as always - a trip onto X will prove that the contents of a barbecue is something that can be fiercely debated over, with one user causing controversy after sharing her unorthodox option.

Taking to the platform to share her latest meal, user Taylor Poindexter (@engineering_bae) posted an image of an entire alligator which she was preparing to barbecue.

"Life of a country woman. Cousins are about to throw this bad boy on the grill," she captioned the image.

Of course, Taylor's choice in meat left people horrified and they weren't shy about sharing their feelings in the comments.

"Americans are really a weird bunch who the f**k eats gator," one person replied, while another commented: "This is so barbaric omg."

"I feel like certain s**t don’t need to be ate," a third added.

However, Taylor wasn't bothered by the backlash, pointing out that its no different to enjoying 'mainstream' meats such as chicken, beef or pork.

"A few folks are saying this is barbaric or cruel, but when I scroll through their accounts, they eat meat. Even if you don't witness it up close and personal, that chicken and cow yall eat also has to be processed. This is no different," she added.

Taylor wasn't alone in her response to the uproar, as serval other users agreed that most people are often too far removed when it comes to the meat they eat.

After all, how different is the barbecued alligator from the meat you by pre-packaged in the supermarket?

"I genuinely think most people are so far removed from the process they forget they’re eating an actual animal," one person replied.

"I mean I think a gator is more humane, at least they have the ability to fight back and fight for survival compared to like a chicken," a second person added.

What do you think?
