Man calls fire brigade after spotting ‘fire’ in apartment only to find out he’d made a mistake

Man calls fire brigade after spotting ‘fire’ in apartment only to find out he’d made a mistake

He didn't realise the truth until it was too late

A bloke who saw an apartment building ‘on fire’ didn’t think twice about doing the right thing and calling the fire department, only to realise things weren’t quite what they seemed.

Kieran Murray was strolling through New York, where he lives, when he looked up and saw a fire blazing through the window of an apartment—or so he thought.

Naturally, he quickly dialed 911 and got the New York Fire Department out to tackle the ‘blaze’ but it was only when the firefighters arrived that he realised his mistake.

In a clip shared to TikTok, on his @kieranknightley account, he explained: “The craziest thing just happened. I saw a fire in a building and called 911.”

At this point, the video cuts to the scene on the street with two fire engines arriving at the building with their lights and sirens on.

But this is where things took a turn for the awkward for our friend Kieran - as he came to realise that the ‘fire’ wasn’t what he thought it was.

“It turns out it was just an eight-foot TV with a yule log on it,” he explained. Ah. Right. Not really a job for the NYFD then.

He continued: “So I ran down and I was, like, ‘this is what I saw’ and they were, like, ‘yeah bro, it’s a yule log, what are you doing?’” I’m not quite sure he’s ever going to live that one down.

Sharing the clip on TikTok, Kieran asked: “What would you have done?”

However, unsurprisingly given the incredibly realistic nature of the TV fake fire, most people agreed that Kieran had done the right thing with one person saying: “They’ll just have a laugh about it for years to come, but no matter what you did the right thing in calling.”

Two firecrews arrived on the scene.

Another commented: “You did the right thing. It's genuinely better to have called and it be a false alarm than have an actual emergency unfold with everyone ignoring it.” A very good point.

A third wrote: “You did the right thing. It looks real and you could not know that nobody was in danger. better safe than sorry.”

While someone added: “This is 100 percent something that would happen to me. You’re a compassionate person, don’t be embarrassed.”

Others said they wished they could see how it had played out for the person whose apartment it was, and I have to admit I’m pretty curious, too.
