It’s been a year and a half since the Titan submersible disaster, but we are continuing to learn new things and get new information on just what went down deep down in the sea.
With a new Netflix documentary set to be released that is said to answer one very important question, the US Coast Guard has released new chilling audio.
The recording, which was shared last week on 7 February, is believed to have captured the Titan sub’s final moments before its catastrophic implosion.

Contact was lost with the now infamous OceanGate vessel on 18 June, 2023 as the five people on board were on a dive down to the wreckage of the Titanic.
With search efforts launched in the hope they were simply trapped underwater, debris and suspected human remains were found as all those inside, including the sub’s owner Stockton Rush, had died.
It was eventually determined that OceanGate’s Titan had suffered a ‘catastrophic implosion’.

And while it is not totally confirmed, it’s suspected this new audio recording captured the moment the implosion occurred.
The US Coast Guard explained that it was picked up by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) moored passive acoustic recorder approximately 900 miles from the site.
It said that it captured the ‘suspected acoustic signature’ of the implosion on 18 June.
“NOAA'S Ocean Noise Reference Station Network consists of thirteen passive acoustic monitoring sites deployed within the Northeastern continental United States,” the Coast Guard added.
Essentially, the recording pretty much sounds just as you’d expect a big underwater boom to sound, as you can practically hear the ripple effect of it afterwards.

Since the disaster in 2023, there have been a number of revelations, particularly focusing on safety concerns raised with Rush which were dismissed, and a documentary featuring a 'banging noise' which had caused the hope those on board were still alive.
And the upcoming Netflix doc aims to look more into Rush, the OceanGate CEO who sits prominently in this tragedy that claimed five lives including his own.

Director Mark Monroe said he hopes Titan will answer some of the burning questions people may still have over the disaster.

"When the Titan submersible went missing, I was horrified and mesmerised by the 24/7 news coverage and global social commentary - just like the rest of the world.
"There was no context for what could have happened to those onboard, and the only touchpoint was the Titanic, a story that’s now become a grim fairy tale.
"The more I dug into this terrible tragedy, the more intrigued I became about how this could have ever happened in the first place, and who exactly was the man who built and then went down with this ship. We hope that this film can help provide answers to these very questions."
