Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp were in a relationship for 14 years, before Depp’s famously tumultuous marriage to Amber Heard. But why did Paradis and Depp break up?
Neither of them have directly commented on the reason behind their split, but Paradis did seem to indicate that she was “unhappy” in their relationship for some time. “Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn’t work from the beginning, it’s never going to work,” she said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
“Don’t push it. Sometimes you could be in an unhappy relationship; you are very much in love with someone, but it’s making you unhappy and you think things can change and you can work it out.”

But as the personal details of Depp and Heard’s marriage play out in court, with Depp suing Heard in the most recent part of their intense legal battle, more information has come out about Paradis and Depp’s split.
Depp recounted a scene he filmed with Heard in 2009 for The Rum Diary: “During the scene in the shower, where we kissed, I felt something I shouldn’t have, because at that time she had her partner and I had Vanessa. It all started with that kiss in the shower.” However, it wasn’t until 2012 that the pair were first linked publicly following Depp’s breakup with Paradis.
Vanessa Paradis has spoken out about the ongoing court case between Depp and Heard. She stated that: “From my personal experience of many years, I can say he was never violent or abusive to me.”
Whilst Heard relentlessly defends her op-ed about domestic violence, where she wrote about the impact of speaking out about domestic violence, Johnny Depp claims that he was the victim of abuse in the relationship, and that Heard attacked him on several occasions. He says he only stayed in the marriage “because my father stayed” in his.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were married for 15 months before Heard filed for divorce, which was finalised in May 2016. Depp agreed to pay Heard “in the region of $8 million” to settle.
At the time, Depp greeted the news of the divorce with a terse public statement: “Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip […] and lies about his personal life.”
As parents of Lily-Rose and Jack Depp, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis do still appear on relatively good terms. But it will be interesting to see if any more details about their split come out during the ongoing court case…
