The world’s biggest and most-connected charity run is back once again, and some of our country’s finest athletes are on board to help raise money for an extremely worthy cause.
We are, of course, talking about the Wings for Life World App Run. If you’re not familiar with the event, it’s an annual charity run which unites runners and wheelchair users around the world of all levels, from beginner to elite, to raise money for the Wings For Life Foundation which conducts vital research into finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.
The race connects participants from around the world via its unique app. All runners and wheelchair users will start at 12pm (Irish time) on Sunday 8th May, getting a 30-minute head start on the app’s ‘Catcher Car’ which will then begin to follow them on their run, gradually getting faster and faster. Once the Catcher Car passes you, you’re off the hook and have successfully completed your run.
We know with many events like this, there can be hesitancy around where exactly your money is going but fear not, as the organisation guarantees that every red cent of your €20 entry fee goes directly to the Wings For Life Foundation to further efforts towards their goal to cure spinal cord injury.
Not only will you have the comfort of knowing your money is going into the right hands, you’ll also get the ego-boost of knowing your are running amongst a group of our country’s most elite sportspeople, including the likes of Irish Women’s Hockey players Lena Tice, Hannah McLoughlin and Sarah Hawkshaw and Connacht Rugby Players Conor Oliver, Caolin Blade and Oisin Dowling.
Also running remotely from their respective locations are soccer legend Neymar da Silva Santos Jr, tennis pros Matteo Berrettini and Stefanos Tsitsipas, skiing great Lindsey Vonn, Dakar Rally legend Cyril Despres and watersport icon Robby Naish in this year’s event – talk about star-studded company to be in!
