Here is an outline of Germany's wartime plan, should all hell break loose on the European continent.
I'd say it's a fair assessment to say that pretty much nobody has an appetite to jack in their day-to-day lives, don the khaki, and head off to the frontlines while their hometowns are mercilessly bombed.
Actually, scratch that; I'd say that absolutely no one fancies living through the above scenario.

And yet, it feels like we've been greeted by a never-ending cycle of news about what would happen in the event of WWIII.
In the past couple of weeks, we've had the EU issue a statement advising citizens to cobble together a '72-hour survival kit' (not that it'll help if you're at ground zero a nuclear strike), while a German defence spokesperson has called for civil defence training in schools.

So all in all, it's not a jolly time to be alive.
If that wasn't enough to keep you awake at night, then maybe you'll enjoy the learning about the German government's wartime plans.

Titled Operation Deutschland, the report outlines a plan to prepare the European nation for the event of all-out war across the continent.
Originally published by Frankfurter Allgemeine and translated by The Diplomat Spain, the report outlines the importance of protecting essential infrastructure - which are your hospitals, power stations, warehouses etc - and moving military equipment to where it needs to be.
The 1,000-page document also outlines how Germany could support the deployment of up to 800,000 NATO troops.
Making sure citizens are prepared for conflict is another key part of the document, including making sure homes have access to generators. This also explains the sudden guidance to create survival kits and warn school kids about the possibility of war.
Lieutenant Colonial Jörn Plischke added that German intelligence services believe that Russia could be ready for further attacks on the west in as little as 'four to five years'.

However, before you start gathering your tin cans and heading off grid, it might be worth remembering that such plans don't mean that we're 100 percent heading to war. After all, it's the job of national security services to anticipate any threats to public safety and plan accordingly.
Which is some reassurance, at least.
A spokesperson for the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) confirmed the existence of the plans in a statement to Newsweek, adding: "[Operation Deutschland] is continually being worked on under the responsibility of the Bundeswehr Homeland Defence Command and is constantly updated.
"To this end, the OPLAN DEU specifies requirements for the Bundeswehr and requirements to be met by other state and civilian entities in defence as a whole-of-government and whole-of-society task. For military security reasons, we cannot go into any details here and therefore cannot confirm the figures listed in the article."
