On 8 July, 2014 a man who was set to board a flight from Bulgaria to Germany ran out of Varna Airport shouting: "I don't want to die here! I have to get out of here!"

He left behind all of his belongings including his passport and CCTV spotted him running out of the airport, climbing over a fence and heading towards a forest.

He was never seen again.

Lars Mittank is sometimes described as the 'world's most famous missing person' after camera footage of him running out of the airport went viral online, but this fame hasn't helped anyone find him.

The German man and Werder Bremen fan had been out on holiday in Bulgaria with friends when he ended up getting into a disagreement with a group of Bayern Munich fans on 6 July, 2014.

Later on that night Mittank split off from his friends and they didn't see him until the next morning, when they did he said he'd been beaten up by a group of men hired by the football fans he'd disagreed with.

While the group was due to fly back to Germany on 7 July, Mittank was checked over by a doctor who told him he'd suffered damage to his jaw and a ruptured eardrum as a result of his injuries, and advised him not to fly.

His friends wanted to stay with him and skip their flight but he persuaded them to stick to their schedule and fly home without him.

Mittank booked a cheap hotel near the airport and while he was there he made a chilling call to his mum.

The 28-year-old told her there were people following him who wanted him dead and told her to cancel his credit cards.

His mother Sandra said: "I thought, God, my son is in danger. I could hear his heart pounding over the phone.

"He said people were trying to rob him or kill him."

CCTV at the hotel saw him pacing up and down hallways as well as hiding in a lift, and the next morning he again called his mum to say that the people coming for him were getting closer.

On 8 July he texted his mum to say he was at the airport, and while he was there he visited a doctor, Kosta Kostoc.

The doctor later said that Mittank was acting in a 'nervous and erratic' manner, but he told the man he was well enough to board a flight home.

However, Mittank was worried about the medication he'd been prescribed by the doctor who treated his ruptured eardrum and when a construction worker entered the doctor's office the 28-year-old fled and shouted about how he didn't want to die, with the footage of him being the last time he was seen in public.

By running away he abandoned his luggage, including his wallet, phone and passport, and the case has never been solved.

There have been a number of theories, but the world hasn't seen hide nor hair of him for over a decade.
