The mother of two children who died after eating a 'poisoned Easter egg' revealed that she got an eerie phone call before they ate it.
It was reported that a 13-year-old girl and her seven-year-old brother, Luís Fernando, fell horribly ill after indulging in a chocolate treat in the lead up to Easter, last week.
The boy started to feel unwell and had to be given CPR by his father, Rafael Silva, on Wednesday (16 April), before being taken swiftly to hospital, where he sadly passed away hours later.
While at the hospital, it was reported that both the boy's mother, Mirian Lira and his sister, Evelyn Silva, started to fall ill and had symptoms of an alleged poisoning.
The pair were struggling to breathe and their hands turned purple, leading to the hospitalisation of both.
Jordélia Pereira Barbosa has been accused of the crime (Newsflash) Evelyn passed away on Monday (21 April) following vascular shock that was brought on by multiple organ failure, Metro reports.
However, following the horror events, Luís' aunt Naiza Santos revealed to Brazilian outlet G1 that Lira had received a terrifying phone call after she discovered the Easter treats.
She recalled: "When the egg arrived, there was no identification of who had sent it, just the note and they didn't say who it was from.
"She [Lira] only received the call, the voice was of a woman, asking if she had received [the Easter egg]."
"She said, 'Yes I did, who is it?'" Santos explained, which was followed by the person on the other end allegedly saying: "You'll find out who it is," before hanging up the phone.
The eerie phone call came before Luís started feeling ill, which the aunt claimed Lira didn't take 'seriously' at first.
"She said she thought it was a joke and didn't take it seriously. But then she looked at him and saw that he was already fainting. That's when she ran to her mother's house asking for help," she claimed.
The egg was said to be 'poisoned' (Newsflash) Following his admission to hospital and subsequent death, Imperatriz Municipal Hospital released a statement reading: "Unfortunately, the clinical condition showed serious and rapid deterioration without responding to treatment."
The children and their parents enjoyed part of an Easter egg that had this message attached: "With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter!!!"
Following the incident, local police have arrested a woman named Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, the ex-partner of father Rafael Silva.
The arrest took place as she was getting off a bus going to her home city of Santa Ines from Imperatriz, after a review of security footage in a shop that revealed she had apparently bought the egg while donning a wig.
Authorities have seized two wigs, chocolate, medicine and bus tickets, with one of the latter being bought just two days before the eggs were delivered.
Both of Lira's children have sadly passed away (Newsflash) Following questioning, Barbosa claimed she bought the eggs in the lead up to Easter but that she did not poison them.
Maranhão Civil Police said in a statement: "The initial investigations point that jealousy and revenge may have been the motivation for the woman to poison chocolate and send it to her family, given that the investigated is the ex-girlfriend of the current partner of one of the victims.
"The Maranhão Civil Police arrived to the investigated after analyzing images from security cameras of Imperatriz's commercial establishment, where the suspect appears, who was wearing a wig, buying chocolate.
"In addition, the arrest was based on testimonies from witnesses and family members indicating the woman as the main suspect of committing the crime."
She is alleged to have travelled to the city, bought chocolate from the shop in disguise, and have the treats sent to Mirian Lira.
