A professional adventurer who managed to track down an abandoned plane some believe to belong to infamous drugs kingpin Pablo Escobar shared a chilling theory about what he believes happened to its crew.

Mike Corey, who runs the Fearless & Far YouTube channel, headed deep into the Mexican jungle on an exhausting three-day trek to find the elusive aircraft which crashed in 1966.

The content creator regularly heads off on 'wild adventures' across the globe and takes his 2.82 million subscribers along for the ride with him, making for some pretty extraordinary videos.

The clip he shot in Mexico and uploaded in June this year was no different, as viewers were left transfixed while watching Corey tackle the difficult terrain, as well as wading through razor sharp grass and swamps.

There's no five-star hotels in the middle of the Mexican jungle either, so the YouTuber and his team had to bed down under the protection of mosquito nets each night to avoid getting even more 'bites and stings'.

Corey explained that the journey into the unknown was the 'hardest trek he has ever done', as well as being the 'craziest adventure of his life'.

And seen as though this is coming from a bloke who has undergone agonising tribal rituals and immersed himself among an 'Indonesian Death Cult', that's saying something.

Corey explained he was motivated to go on the taxing trip in the hopes of 'uncovering the mystery' surrounding Pablo Escobar's alleged cargo plane which has baffled people for nearly six decades.

It crashed in the Yucatan Peninsula near the town of Celestun in Mexico back in 1966, while supposedly carrying a s**tload of drugs, but the wreckage was only discovered 13 years later.

However, Escobar would have been just 17-years-old at the time and was still somewhat still on the straight and narrow, so it's highly unlikely that this plane did belong to him.

Regardless though, authorities couldn't work out what actually happened to the aircraft, how it ended up there, or the fate of the crew and passengers who were onboard.

Adding another layer of mystery to the strange crash, the cargo which was supposed to be inside the plane also vanished.

Officials still don't know what went down all these years later - but after battling through a 12 kilometre stretch of mangroves and making it to the abandoned aircraft, Corey reckons he can hazard a decent guess at it.

While navigating his way through the plane and pointing out 'rusty cocaine barrels' to his subscribers, the thrillseeker shared his theories about what he believes happened to the crew on 'Escobar's jet'.

"Wow, man, I love this stuff," Corey said as he walked through the plane. "Imagine what it would've been like though - maybe they were shot down, maybe there was some other problem.

"I mean, this is an old plane bought on the black market, right? It would've been pretty hellish.

"Then I think you would've been quite happy that you survived...if they survived. And then quite stressed, knowing how to get out of these mangroves."

Corey explained that a local guide accompanying him, José, is one of the few people who are aware of a 'secret passage' to the crash site, but the social media star admitted he wouldn't fancy his chances making it there without him.

He continued: "I can't imagine any human being ever being able to get through here. Especially one not used to this environment. Doesn't know the dangers, the risk.

"Ill-equipped without mosquito repellent, without a machete, without any known direction where to go."

He reckoned the combination of the 'biting insects', sharp blades of grass and the mangroves would equate to a death sentence for a group of people who have no idea how to navigate that kind of situation.

"You'd be wrecked," Corey said. "You would die. I'm assuming what happened is they crashed - [although] this plane looks in pretty good shape - that they didn't die, and they tried to make it back and died in the forest.

"Or they got rescued in a helicopter, perhaps, right? By a cartel. There's no cargo on this now. The cargo mysteriously disappeared. No one knows where all the snow went, but it's not on the plane anymore.

"But the mysteries are unsolved. There was a rumour from the hunters that would come here, that there was a plane.

"No one really knew the story, but there was only about a couple years behind us where someone actually found the way, made the way, carved the way through the impenetrable fortress of the mangroves."

The plane is pretty much impossible to reach, especially due to it being situated in the Yucatan Peninsula, which is renowned for its challenging terrain and poisonous snakes.

Escobar was 44 when he died in a gunfight with Colombian police and DEA agents back in 1993.
