A doctor has revealed the correct way to flush a toilet, and it looks like putting the seat down has many benefits.
Dr Karan Raj, known on TikTok as @dr.karanr, has shared the importance of closing the toilet lid before flushing, and the reason is exceptionally grim.
He explained how flushing with the lid open creates a 'raging sewage volcano', which allows 'toilet juice' to travel far and wide.

What a lovely thought.
Dr Karan outlined the findings of a scientific study, which found that keeping the toilet lid open allows for germs to enter the air via tiny water droplets.
"The droplets were able to move at 2 meters per second, and reach heights of 1.5 meters above the toilet bowel in eight seconds. Some of the smallest droplets could linger in the air for more than several minutes. Placing them at optimal nose height for unsuspecting humans," he explained.

This can lead to pathogens such as E. coli, Norovirus and Adenoviruses to be 'spewed into the air' as they ride on the back of the tiny water droplets.
Dr Karan advises keeping the lid shut when flushing as this helps to redirect the germs onto the floor instead of the air.
Regularly disinfecting your toilet bowl as well as your toilet brush can also help to reduce the 'pathogen load'.

TikTok users were quick to comment on the video, with many agreeing with Dr. Karan's reasons and stating that the toilet lid should always be shut.
"This is why the debate about putting the seat up or down is irrelevant. The lid is there for a reason," one social media user commented.

A second person agreed, writing: "I learned this a few years ago and it changed my life," while a third TikTok user added: "This is my number 1 rule for guests coming into my house. my family knows I will go mental if I see the toilet seat up."
As well as shutting the lid and disinfecting the toilet bowl and brush, there are other steps you can take to help keep germs at bay.
Moving your tooth brush away from the toilet is a good move, as well as anything that you put on your face regularly, such as brushes, flannels and combs.
