A lad has described himself as a 'f**king idiot' after realising he's been ordering hot milk instead of coffee in Italy.

Let's face it - us Brits aren't exactly known for our language skills.

Even when we do make the effort and try to learn a few words or phrases to get us through a holiday, it can often backfire.

Just ask Kaine (@justkaine), who shared a rather embarrassing predicament he found himself in while visiting Italy.

In a video, which has been viewed nearly 500k times, he asks: "Can someone explain to me why I'm a f***ing idiot please?"

Kaine then launches into a story time, which he kicks off by letting viewers know that he loves to drink coffee.

As we all know, coffee has a long history in Italy, having become one of the first European ports to import coffee beans in the 16th century.

The country is the birthplace of many of the caffeinated beverages you drink today, including cappuccinos, espressos, macchiatos and - what we're here to talk about today - lattes.

"My good old beverage purchase when I go to any old coffee shop is a latte," explains Kaine.

Kaine ran into a bit of trouble while trying to order a latte in Italy.

"So someone explain to me why all week I was walking around f***ing Milan, going into every coffee shop, ordering a latte, sipping it and thinking, 'Hmm, why does this taste weird?'

"Then it gets to the end of the week, I go to the woman, the barista lady, and I'm like, 'Can I get a latte?' And she's like, 'Do you want that with coffee?'."

Expressing what was going through his head at that moment, the TikToker added: "Yeah, of course I want it with f***ing coffee.

"That's what I said, I want a latte, what are you talking about? 'Do I want it with coffee?' That's what a latte is, it's coffee."

Now, if there are any Italian speakers reading this right now - or just anyone with Google Translate - you'll already understand Kaine's almighty gaffe here.

You see, the word 'latte' actually translates as 'milk'. No coffee - just the white stuff, straight up.

Poor old Kaine didn't realise the mistake until about a week into his trip, meaning he'd just been drinking cups of hot milk while in the coffee capital of Europe.

"Turns out latte is milk," he says as he bursts out laughing. "In Italian, latte means milk. So all week I've been going to these Italian coffee shops and asking people for f***ing steamed milk."

Whoops!

He found his blunder hilarious.

Thankfully he saw the funny side of his blunder, as did his followers, with one writing in the comments section: "We all have our American moments."

"How could you not taste the lack of coffee?" asked another, to which Kaine replied, "I JUST THOUGHT THAT WAS HOW IT TASTED IN ITALY."

A third quipped: "They definitely all laughed at you and watched you taste it and laughed harder."

Just in case you find yourself in a similar situation, if you want to order what's considered a latte in the UK, you have to ask for a latte macchiato or a caffe latte.

Unless babyccinos are your thing, in which case go off.
