According to a psychopath, there is one easy-to-spot trait that will tell you if your partner is one or not.
Despite some psychopaths saying that their uncomfortable feelings around people crying is a tell-tale sign, while others say that an overall lack of empathy is a red flag, there is one that you can spot in someone else that could save you from a world of hurt.
Unfortunately, it's not as easy to spot a psychopath as it is in films - after all, there aren't exactly a bunch of Patrick Batemans out there plotting their next murder.

Psychopaths fit into the background of society, and you probably wouldn't notice them unless they told you they were diagnosed with the disorder.
According to the NHS, a 'psychopath' is someone with an antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), which essentially means that they have a complete lack of empathy, are manipulative and 'often have a total disregard for the consequences of their actions'.
Awareness group PsychopathyIs state that 30 percent of people show some psychopathic traits, though luckily just 0.6 percent of Brits could be diagnosed psychopaths.

But when it comes to relationships, how can you tell if your partner is a psychopath without even themselves knowing?
Author and diagnosed psychopath M.E. Thomas has described the one giveaway in a partner that you should be aware of.
When asked what it's like to be a psychopath, she answered: "If you experience negative consequences, they don't last.

"You don't dwell on them, you don't kind of beat yourself up about them, you move on very quickly.
"You have this superpower ability to compartmentalise and just be like 'that was then, this is now'."
She highlighted that the consequence is that you fail to learn from experiences, as you 'keep doing the thing'.

Applying this to relationships, Thomas added that you never grow, you continue to do what you want, regardless of how the other person feels, over and over.
"You keep cheating on people and people break up with you, and you're like 'I didn't care about that relationship anyway', so you keep cheating - you actually have to care about the thing and care about the loss of a thing for it to really sink in," she explained.
So pay attention to your partner - if they keep doing the same thing wrong repeatedly, or keep disregarding your feelings for their best interests, it might be time to call it quits.
