Why Elon Musk uses 'weight-loss drug' Mounjaro over Ozempic after experiencing both

The tech billionaire has spoken about his preference for Mounjaro over Type-2 diabetes drug Ozempic

Elon Musk has revealed why he prefers to use Mounjaro over Ozempic.

Ozempic is a medication that helps to bring down a person's blood sugar levels, which is one reason why it's primarily used for those with Type-2 diabetes.

However, in recent years, it has become increasingly popular for weight loss, with many people - including celebrities. using it to drop the pounds.

Mounjaro is a similar weight loss medication, however, there are some important differences between the two.

Importantly for people considering the medication in the UK, Mounjaro is approved for weight loss in Britain, while Ozempic is only approved for treating Type-2 diabetes - meaning you can only get Mounjaro on prescription for weight loss.

Meanwhile, the active ingredient is different.

While Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, Ozempic contains semaglutide.

As laid out by ASDA’s Online Doctor, Mounjaro reduces your appetite, helping you feel fuller for longer while following a healthy eating plan. Ozempic is used to regulate to regulate blood sugar levels by ‘improving how your body uses insulin’.

Last December, Musk revealed he had switched from using Ozempic to Mounjaro after sharing a photo of himself dressed up as Santa.

"Ozempic Santa," he said. "Technically, Mounjaro, but that doesn’t have the same ring to it."

He added that after taking Ozempic - which made him 'fart and burp like Barney from The Simpsons' - he switched to Mounjaro.

"Mounjaro seems to have fewer side effects and be more effective," he wrote on X.

Musk isn't the only person who has spoken about their experience with both drugs and admitted they preferred Mounjaro.

For example, Jeremy Clarkson previously revealed he had tried out Ozempic for weight loss two years ago, but that he’d suffered extreme nausea.

"My body lost the ability to deal with gluttony but once the initial enthusiasm had worn off, my mind still wanted to breakfast on Cadbury Fruit & Nut," he wrote in his The Times column. "This meant I was sick a lot.

With nausea being a common side effect of Ozempic, Clarkson later tried Mounjaro and found better results for his weight loss.

Although, he admitted it was a struggle not being able to enjoy his favourite foods.

"You find yourself living a minibar existence," he wrote, joking that a 'handful of sunflower seeds' would be enough to keep him full. "That’s not living. That’s existing."

Amy Schumer also had a better experience on Mounjaro, previously explaining: "I tried Ozempic almost three years ago and I was like, bedridden.

"I was like, vomiting — and then you have no energy. But other people take it and they’re all good."

She went on to explain that she'd had an online health referral via online midlife health clinic Midi Health and was also feeling the benefits of being prescribed estrogen and progesterone for perimenopause symptoms, she continued: "So that’s been great and Mounjaro’s been great."
