Si King recalls moment Dave Myers told him his diagnosis in heartbreaking admission about life without him

The legendary pair had been mates for three decades

Si King has recalled the moment Dave Myers told him about his devastating cancer diagnosis.

The Hairy Bikers star died on 28 February after suffering from cancer, with King now making a heartbreaking admission about life without him.

Reflecting on the future of his TV career now without his best mate, he told Jay Rayner for The Observer that ‘there is no Hairy Bikers without Dave’.

The pair met back in the 90s on the set of TV drama The Gambling Man. And their friendship was truly sparked when Myers saw King having ‘a curry and two pints of lager’ at lunch, while most of the crew tucked into salads.

Together, the legends went on to publish more than 20 cookbooks and presented various shows from The Hairy Bikers: Mums Know Best to The Hairy Bikers’ Cook Off.

Myers announced he was undergoing chemotherapy back in May 2022 and King said he had to ‘pull over’ when his best pal initially called him with the news of his diagnosis.

“I just couldn’t compute it. I must have sounded terrible,” he said.

“There was just a level of disbelief. And to be perfectly honest I couldn’t get my head around it all the way through his fight. Is this really happening? My best mate?”

The Hairy Biker said the treatment ‘was all about the fight right to the very last day’ as he added of Myers: “The reality was he just didn’t want to go. It was too soon.”

After losing his best mate and co-star, King admitted it’s only recently that he’s started to think about what he wants to do with his career now.

“I’ve spent all my life from very young thinking about what other people want and what their needs and aspirations are,” he said.

“So to be presented at my age with the question of what you really want to do is very difficult. We were a partnership, a double act.”

The TV star continued: “It would be incredibly churlish not to say thank you to our fanbase. I sincerely hope that whatever I do next they come with me and we start another journey together.”

And, confirming the end of the legendary staple, King added: “There is no Hairy Bikers without Dave. Because it’s plural.”

King shared a statement to announce his friend’s death in February, to say Myers had ‘passed away peacefully at home’. "I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime,” he said.

"I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya."
