Due to its overwhelming success, Warner Bros announced a sequel - titled Joker: Folie à Deux - was in the works and would land in cinemas in October next year.
Alongside Phoenix reprising his role, the movie will also see Lady Gaga take on the role of Harley Quinn.
And with the second movie’s release less than a year away, fans have been rewatching a clip of Phoenix's knock-out performance in a reel that has been doing the rounds online, showing Fleck’s transition into his chilling alter ego.

Commenting on the clip on YouTube one fan said: “What an amazing actor, seriously. He was perfect for the role.”
A second commented: “In my book, Joaquin Phoenix is the greatest actor that ever lived. Genius!” High praise indeed.
Someone else added: “Joaquin Phoenix has got to be one of the greatest actors ever. Since I first saw him in Gladiator, his acting is always beyond convincing. In the role of Commodus, you can see in his eyes that he carries a grief for being rejected by his father his whole life.
“It’s unbelievable how he manages to become and live his characters to the fullest.”

While another wrote: “What I love about this is that it’s just a wardrobe and make-up test, but Joaquin is so in character it doesn’t feel like a production test at all.
“You are seeing the real joker right then and there before your very eyes.”
“I thought after Heath Ledger that there could never be a better Joker, but Joaquin Phoenix showed me I was wrong,” praised a fifth fan.
