Viggo Mortensen says he will return for new Lord of the Rings movie under one specific condition

Viggo Mortensen says he will return for new Lord of the Rings movie under one specific condition

The Lord of the Rings actor has hinted that he could be a part of the upcoming project under particular circumstances

Viggo Mortensen has hinted that he could be a part of the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie, under one condition.

Fans of Middle Earth have another movie in the works now which will take a look at a part of the story which has not yet been committed to film before.

And unlike other adaptations and interpretations of Tolkien's books, this one will still be set within the time frame of The Lord of the Rings, not several hundred or thousand years earlier.

Mortensen, who played Aragorn in Peter Jackson's film trilogy, did not reveal anything specific about the plot of the upcoming film.

He told GQ: "I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually."

While plot details on the upcoming film are thin, the title might give some clues about what it might be about.

It's called The Hunt for Gollum.

Fans of Lord of the Rings will know that this is a part of the story where Gandalf enlists the help of Aragorn, at this point still a mere ranger, to track down Gollum and question him about the One Ring.

Eventually the skilled ranger Aragorn is able to track down Gollum.

But the pair discover that Gollum had already been previously captured by the dark lord Sauron and under torture had given away the words 'Shire, Baggins'.

This leads Sauron to dispatch the Nazgul to the Shire, where the four Hobbits encounter them.

So if this is indeed the part of the story that will be covered in the new film, Aragorn is an important character in it.

Mortensen has hinted at what it would take for him to reprise the role.

He told GQ: "I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth.

"I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise."

Mortensen is now 65, and the plot line where Aragorn hunts Gollum takes place before he meets Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin at the Prancing Pony.

So for that plot to work some de-aging might need to happen in post, which could go against Mortensen's condition.

The upcoming movie is set to star Andy Serkis as Gollum/Sméagol, with Serkis also taking on a directing role.
