His very public fallout with ex-wife Heard saw him dropped from the Fantastic Beasts franchise and it also coincided with him leaving the Pirates of the Caribbean film saga.
However, he's now back.
He was all smiles as he walked the red carpet and made his return to the big screen, the bright lights and the screams of fans and supporters.

In the period drama titled Jeanne du Barry, Depp plays France's King Louis XV.
The movie has been directed and produced by Maïwenn and also stars Pierre Richard, Benjamin Lavernhe, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, Melvil Poupaud and India Hair.
The synopsis is described as: Jeanne (Maïwenn), a young working-class woman hungry for culture and pleasure, uses her intelligence and allure to climb the rungs of the social ladder one by one.
"She becomes the favourite of King Louis XV who, unaware of her status as courtesan, regains through her his appetite for life.

"They fall madly in love and, against all propriety and etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court."
Depp received a standing ovation as he and Maïwenn walked into the Palais.
He even looked like he was holding back tears after taking his seat and seeing the humungous response to him being there.

While it seems like everyone was stoked to see Depp back in his element, his film's inclusion at the annual event has also seen some backlash.
Actor Adele Haenel slammed Cannes as a festival 'celebrating rapists' in an open letter published in Telerama, according to Variety.
Haenel said Cannes was 'ready to do anything to defend their rapist chiefs'.
However, the director of the event responded to the critics and said Depp deserves to be there.

Thierry Fremaux said: "If you thought that it’s a festivals for rapists, you wouldn’t be here listening to me, you would not be complaining that you can’t get tickets to get into screenings.”
He added: “I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the US.
"To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule, it’s the freedom of thinking, and the freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework."
