The Fallen Sun follows the award-winning television saga, which has been reimagined for film.
The plot involves a serial killer who is terrorising London while disgraced detective John Luther (Elba) sits behind bars.
He is haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who is constantly mocking and taunting him along the way.

Fuelled with rage, Luther breaks out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.
The film also stars Dermot Crowley, who returns as Martin Schenk.
After only just watching the trailer, viewers are already giving the series a five-star review.
One person commented: "10/10 takes place in best."

Another added: "Don't mind me, I'm just going to watch this trailer a billion times until the movie comes out."
However, people still couldn't help themselves by calling for Elba to take up the vacant role of James Bond, as one viewer wrote: "It's gone from being a London cop drama to a James Bond spin off."
Someone else said: "James Bond everyone. We need this man to be Bond."

Sadly it seems that Bond producers have explained why Elba is unlikely to play the iconic role.
Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson revealed last year that they are yet to pitch prospective actors for the role but reckon Elba might not be keen anyway.
Speaking to Variety, they said it was ‘early days’ in the quest to find a new Bond and that they hadn’t spoken to Elba - or anyone else - about the role just yet.
The pair said Elba was ‘great’ and admitted that they ‘love Idris’, but suggested the time commitment to the role might put the star off signing up.

Broccoli said: “The thing is, it’s going to be a couple of years off and when we cast Bond, it’s a 10/12-year commitment. So he’s probably thinking, ‘Do I really want that thing? Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it].”
Wilson added: “And he was in his early 30s at the time!”
Elba also had his say on The Shop podcast: “It is not a goal for my career. I don’t think that playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals. It will definitely satisfy the will of a nation. I’m not gonna lie, every corner of the world I go, and I’m talking about different cultures, they always go ‘Bond'.
“I’m not that guy, but in everyone’s world I might be.”
Never say never.
