Orlando Bloom praised after explaining why he called Katy Perry by her real name in VMAs speech

Fans were left stunned after Orlando Bloom called Katy Perry by her real name in his VMAs speech.

Viewers were shocked when the 'Firework' singer, 39, wasn't called by her stage name after she picked up the Video Vanguard award at this year's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Wednesday (11 September).

The award, which recognises lifetime achievement, was given to her by the Pirates of the Caribbean star, 47, of whom she has been engaged to since 2019. They share a four-year-old daughter together, Daisy.

Bloom began his speech with: "Give it up for our newest Video Vanguard, Katheryn Hudson,” adding: "You fell in love with her as Katy Perry, I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson.

"You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light and her unique sense of humour into every song she writes and every music video she creates.

"I know her as a mother, as a partner who brings that same sense of love and joy to our family.

"She loves with her whole heart and it’s kind of irresistible. Congratulations on this honour baby, I’m so proud of you."

Following the heartfelt speech, fans were more focused on the fact that they couldn't believe the singer's real name was not 'Katy Perry'.

One viewer said: "So I’m today years old when I learned that Katy Perry’s real name is not Katy Perry… is Taylor the only artist who goes by her real name."

“Guys I didn’t know Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry were married I was so confused on why he was calling her real name,” another added.

While a third comment read: “KATY PERRY ISN'T HER REAL NAME WHAT.”

After picking up her award, the 'I Kissed a Girl' singer joked: "Thank you, I did that all on my first day of my period, can you believe it?

"Thank you so much to MTV for believing in my weirdness from day one.

"There are so many things that have to align to have a long and successful career as an artist. There are no decades-long accidents.

"My Katy Cats, you stood by me for a lifetime and the LGBTQ community who I recognise I would not be here without.

"You showed me that you can be both kind and snatched.

"Thank you to Orlando for keeping me grounded, celebrated and doing the dishes.

"And lastly, for my Daisy, the only flower I'll ever need."
