Before joining the Westminster benches, Zahawi held an expansive career as a businessman.
Following his departure from Smiths & Brooks Ltd in 2000, he founded the data analytics and market research firm YouGov with Stephan Shakespeare.
He continued with the firm as CEO while beginning his career in politics, first as an aid to Jeffery Archer, before being elected as a Conservative councillor for Putney in 1994.
After serving three terms in the London Borough, Zahawi set his sights on Stratford-Upon-Avon, where he would be elected as its Conservative MP in 2010.

He spent much of his time in government advising on foreign relations, before being named as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Education in 2018.
Fast forward to the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020, Zahawi became the first Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for COVID-19 Vaccine Deployment in November of that year.
He would oversee the roll-out of COVID vaccines in the UK until his reassignment to Secretary of State for Education following the departure of his predecessor, Gavin Williamson, in 2021.
This took him to July 2022, when he was renamed Chancellor of the Exchequer following Rishi Sunak’s resignation.

Outside of his parliamentary duties, Zahawi and his wife Lana boast a property portfolio worth over £100 Million.
Controlled by their joint company Zahawi and Zahawi Ltd, the couple’s holdings include an £18 Million Asda Megastore, a riding school, a NatWest bank in Wimbledon (£5.25m), a WH Smith in Walton-on-Thames (£1.32m) five residential properties worth £17 Million and a Co-op superstore bought just last month for £6.3 Million.
Questions were raised over Zahawi’s financial integrity when he alarmingly claimed over £170,000 in expenses in 2012/13.
It was brought to light that ‘mistake’ led to electricity bills for his riding school slipping into the claim.
