Netflix viewers are being warned not to watch a new horror series late at night, despite how 'amazing' it is. Watch the trailer here:
The new series, titled Archive 81, landed on the streaming service this week and stars Mamoudou Athie as an archivist tasked with restoring a collection of tapes from the 90s – in turn uncovering dark truths about the building he’s working at.
According to Netflix, the creepy show is what you’d get if you combined The Blair Witch Project, Midsommar and Frequency, which will no doubt come as a tempting comparison to horror lovers.
A synopsis says: "Archive 81 follows archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), who takes a job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994. Reconstructing the work of a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), he is drawn into her investigation of a dangerous cult at the Visser apartment building.
"As the season unfolds across these two timelines, Dan slowly finds himself obsessed with uncovering what happened to Melody.
"When the two characters form a mysterious connection, Dan becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago.
"An original story loosely inspired by the popular podcast of the same name, Archive 81 is a supernatural thriller series executive produced by showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Vampire Diaries), James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster (The Conjuring Universe film franchise and Malignant), Rebecca Thomas (Stranger Things, Limetown), Antoine Douaihy (Panic, The Good Cop) and Paul Harris Boardman (Deliver Us from Evil).”
Fans are warning other viewers not to watch the series late at night, with one tweeting: "Archive 81 man I’m telling ya don’t watch it at night yall stay safe."
Another wrote: “Watching Archive 81 immediately before going to bed may not have been the wisest choice."
Even Netflix agrees, having referred to the new show on social media as 'a terrifying new series executive produced by James Wan that you won’t want to watch at night'.
If you think you can hack it, though, many people are singing its praises, with one viewer saying they couldn't 'turn it off', adding: "Holy s**t is Archive 81 amazing. The pacing, the suspense, the jump scares at the right time that don't cheapen the experience."
Someone else said: "This Archive 81 series is amazing."
