Kevin Hart’s latest movie - an action comedy heist set 40,000ft in the air - has landed on Netflix.

Lift centres on Cyrus Whitaker (played by Hart) a seasoned criminal who finds himself coaxed out of a retirement for one last job: working with the government to take down a team of international terrorists by… well, nicking $500 million in gold from a passenger plane.

Directed by F. Gary Gray, who previously worked on Friday and The Italian Job, Lift also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio and Úrsula Corberó.

A synopsis from Netflix explains: “A master thief is wooed by his ex-girlfriend and the FBI to pull off an impossible heist with his international crew on a 777 passenger flight from London to Zurich.”

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Hart said the movie turned the heist genre on its head by having it set onboard a plane.

“The idea of the heist taking place in the air was a really creative concept, right?” he said.

“We’re no stranger to heist movies at this point, we’ve seen a lot of them in our time, so when you can find something to hold on to that adds the context of ‘new’, I think that’s good."

Hart went on: “Our writers and creators who were all part of this process did a good job of giving us something different to hold on to and base the movie around. The gold being on the plane in the sky and having to take the plane and have the crazy plan attached to it? I think it all was great."

Having previously worked on the 2013 remake of The Italian Job, Gray shared that he ‘loved’ to work on heist movies.

He said: “I love this genre because it lets me unleash my imagination with cutting-edge technology, draw inspiration from diverse global cultures and experiences, and keeps my love for learning new things fired up.

“I also love the opportunity to assemble a great ensemble cast, and working with tools that make me feel like a big kid in a futuristic toy store adds an extra layer of excitement to the process.”

And it turns out Lift has a link to the UK as much of the movie was filmed on location across Northern Ireland and at Harbour Studios.

Chief executive of Northern Ireland Screen Richard Williams said: "The dedication and craftmanship of the local crew complemented the work of global players Kevin Hart and F Gary Gray to bring this eagerly anticipated film to life."

Lift is available to stream on Netflix right now.
