After a long journey full of twists and turns, the fourth and final season of The Sinner dropped on Netflix on 26 January.
Although fans had to wait nearly two years to see the next case of Detective Harry Ambrose’s (Bill Pullman) unfold, it seems it was worth the wait, with many viewers describing it as the ‘best season yet’.
Although Ambrose has appeared across all the seasons, each one is a stand-alone story centred on an unusual crime.
In the final instalment, the detective is set to retire - but an unexpected event turns his holiday into a whodunit.
Per the synopsis: “Still reeling from the trauma of a previous case a year ago, the now-retired Harry Ambrose travels to Hanover Island in northern Maine for a recuperative getaway with his partner, Sonya (Jessica Hecht).
“When an unexpected tragedy occurs involving the daughter of a prominent island family, Ambrose is recruited to help the investigation, only to be thrown into a mystery of mounting paranoia that will turn this sleepy tourist island, and Ambrose’s life, upside down.”
Up until this point, many hailed the first season starring Jessica Biel as the best one yet - however, the latest run has changed some opinions.
Viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the new episodes, with one writing: “The Sinner is ageing like fine wine.”
“Season 4 of The Sinner was the best yet. The whole series is dark but very good,” said another.
A third added: “Who else has seen season 4 of The Sinner? I can’t believe how good this is. Best season so far. Even better than season 1.”
Even the first episode had people hooked, including this commenter who said: “The first episode of The Sinner season 4 on @Netflix is one of the best starts to a series in a very long time.
“So intriguing, and beautifully shot.”
Those are some mighty fine reviews, and they continue to roll in as more and more people binge-watch the show.
As for the cast, alongside Pullman and Hecht, you’ve got Frances Fisher, Alice Kremelberg and Neal Huff as the Meg Muldoon family.
Meanwhile, Biel - who was nominated for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and Critic's Choice Award for her part in season one - serves as an executive producer.
So what are you waiting for? The fourth and final installment of The Sinner is available to watch on Netflix now.
