Val Kilmer, 62, was educated at the prestigious performing arts school Juilliard and began his career as a stage actor, appearing in plays Henry lV and Slab Boys before venturing into film in the mid-1980s. Kilmer's appearance as Lieutenant Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky in Top Gun in 1986 propelled him to fame and throughout the 1990s he starred in blockbusters such as Batman Forever and Heat.
Throughout the 2000s Kilmer featured in films such as Spartan and Alexander but in recent years has experienced serious health problems. In 2017 Kilmer’s battle with throat cancer was revealed, through which he has undergone chemotherapy and two tracheostomies, and in 2020 it was revealed Kilmer now uses a feeding tube to eat.
Kilmer recently made headlines after it was revealed that artificial intelligence was used to recreate his voice so that his character was able to ‘speak’ during his appearance in Top Gun: Maverick. Tom Cruise reportedly insisted that Kilmer be included in the sequel.
