An expert has revealed why ordering the second-cheapest wine option on a restaurant's menu is a bad choice.
Etiquette expert William Hanson has shared his top tips for ordering wine when out dining, revealing there's a simple way to get discounted wine without opting for the poorest quality.
In a video, William explained that the second-cheapest wine on a menu is usually of the "poorest quality" as it's had the "biggest mark up".

"When ordering from a wine list, don't make the mistake of picking the second cheapest item on the menu. That's often the wine with the biggest mark up from the restaurant and often the poorest of quality," he stated.
William then proceeded to share an alternative to the second-cheapest wine, revealing that you should ask if the restaurant has any "end-of-bin" wines.
"Instead, ask your sommelier for any suggestions that they may have, including if they have any end-of-bin wines. These are wines that are no longer on the menu, but they might have some bottles round the corner available for a discount," the etiquette expert explained to his followers.

His final tip was to not be afraid of asking for the house wine, as he reassured people that there is "no shame" in ordering it.
Instagram users were quick to praise William for his advice, with one person commenting: "This one is actually very helpful! Coolio!" as a second added: "Thank you! I would always go for the second cheapest...won't do that anymore!"
A third person said: "Oh goodness, I go for the second cheapest allll the time. I am so happy I came upon this video. Also, really appreciate the empowerment to go ahead and order the house wine."

William, who is the director of etiquette training institute The English Manner, has also shared tips on the correct way to drink Tequila, taking many people by surprise after they realised they had been drinking the spirit completely wrong.
In an informative video shared on TikTok, he explained why Tequila should be "sipped" as oppose to being knocked back in one.
"You've been drinking tequila wrong. We don't shoot it back in a shot form. Instead, in Mexico, the correct check ahead is to sip tequila," he said.

The expert continued: "And then if you need to in between, you can use lime or orange and salt and suck in order to cleanse the palate."
