So, you've finally decided to ditch the comfort of your lounge room and get away this summer. And, you’re taking it another level by going camping. Bloody oath.
Camping is obviously a fantastic way to reconnect with nature, unwind, and just have a good time — touch grass, as they say. But, as a first-timer, where do you start? Don't worry, we've got you covered. Here's our beginner's guide to conquering your first-ever summer camping trip:
Picking your perfect spot
Advert
Whether you prefer the organised comfort of a national park campground or the wild freedom of dispersed camping, choose a location that suits your style. But, you can’t just pitch your tent up anywhere. Be sure to research where you’re going, and find campgrounds or otherwise legal spots to camp so your summer trip doesn’t end abruptly with a big fat fine.
On top of that, you probably want to stay as close to the coast as you can. It’s the Aussie summer, after all. You’ll want to cool off with an ocean dip (or 10).
Getting the right gear
A reliable tent, a decent sleeping bag, camp cookware and a (big) cooler are essential items for any camping trip. Any of life’s premium extras (like a speaker and some outdoor games) aren’t essential, but they are absolutely recommended.

Pack like a pro
Just because it’s summer, doesn’t mean the weather is going to be predictable. Pack layers of clothing for changing weather conditions, bring plenty of water, a basic repair kit and, most importantly, a well-stocked first-aid kit. On top of that, bring any tarps or other products that can help rainproof your set-up. You can thank your past-self later.
Be careful of campfires
Obviously, a campfire is usually an essential part of any camping trip. But, in the summer, the heat probably means you’re not gonna need it. If you insist on having a campfire, though, make sure you check the area’s fire restrictions before gathering any wood. Fire safety is no joke and should be taken seriously.

Embrace the night sky
Try and avoid the temptation to camp somewhere full of creature comforts. Challenge yourself, and head somewhere you can see the stars in their full glory. Bonus points if you can hear waves crash as you fall asleep.
Remember, leave no trace
Pack up all your trash, minimise your impact on the environment, and try and leave your campsite exactly how you found it. By the end of the trip, you’re going to fall in love with camping, and you’re going to want to ensure whoever comes next gets to fall in love with it too.
